amazon rainforest fires. Amazonia burns in 2024

The Amazon rainforest is at a critical tipping point. We are in a season of record fires, amidst years of record drought. Not only in Brazil, but also serious fires across Bolivia, as well as intense hot spots in central and southern Peru, and also out of control fires in Ecuador. Endangering the lives of people and wildlife.

Half the rain in Amazonia comes from Amazonia, because the forest itself, the plants & trees, are the biggest store of water. That is why the forest must remain standing.

The accumulated devastation is the worst in the southern Amazon. This is primarily due to excessive beef production, which completely levels the forest. The Pantanal of Brazil, the world’s largest tropical wetland, has also been experiencing drought year after year. That is because the Pantanal gets most of its rain from Amazonia. The same atmospheric river that brings rain from the Amazon to the Pantanal also supplies South-Eastern Brasil with almost half it’s rain. Without Amazonia, southern Brasil would be a desert. The protection of the Amazon is critical to the water security and temperature control of Brasil and the continent of South America as a whole, and the World.

The Amazon is a rainforest. A humid forest that is always supposed to be wet. It is not designed to burn out of control. The Amazon is at the equator, which receives the most intense solar rays. The Amazon, along with all other rainforests of the world are literally the cooling system of Earth’s equator. Without sufficient forest cover of water-filled plants that also release vapor to reflect the solar radiation, the temperature and drought will increase. Which will lead to a die-off of plants and animals designed for wet conditions, and the forest will contract even more…

The Amazon rainforest must be protected. For the health of South America and the planet. We cannot afford to lose anymore rainforest.
